Levanger

Levanger #11 of #12 protected cultural environments in Norway.

Riksantikvaren in 2008 sent a fax to temporarily preserve the city – “you can’t protect it yourselves, we need to do it for you”

No ice – furthered development thought winter.

Shopping center in 1980s and new highway brought people out of the city

70-80,000 years ago people have live din this area, 5,000 years started cattle and grain

1846 plan is one of the main reasons for protected cultural heritage. Urban plan is best protected because it was so early.

Town was built in a mix of styles – local to the town. Switzerstile, jugenstile.

Backyard spaces are to be revitalized.

Events throughout the year – few but very large. Help to develop town identity and bring people in to connect with the town center.

18 towns are having these issues, but only Levanger is protected . Its not the protection that’s the problem.

Future of small town may be more of a meeting place than a trade center. Meeting places are so important for congregation

Working on successful programs now to integrate immigrants, old people, youth, nature trainers.

How do we densify? If the Main Street improves, there will be sudden development

At first, people were very angry, thought it would make the town a museum, newspapers attacking decision. Hard for them to realize the value of old. Worked on a project to show town what value the city has.

Take children and youths on tours of architectural heritage.

If you can show what the value has to contribute to identity and proudness of city, it can go a long way to helping owners want to preserve the town.

Constantly trying to tell people to think differently. You can develop and do new things in town, but it’s how you do it, and how you do it The team must be built ht preserve, . See them, talk to the, , work with them, give them some money maybe. Give them incentive. “Bring them a flower” show them you help them.z

Ho can we involve people to take ownership

Lots of youth programs, including “design your dream city.”

“Super sitting” with smalll resourcouess you can do many things efficiently and at once from multiple programs you can get more done.

Investing even in very little sets the seed for flowers to shine and others want to give back.

Politicians are very involved and are akin to this way of thinking they must get involved to.

In one year maybe you can see how well things can work

In 2017, decided that contrasts are no longer acceptable. New construction needs to be in dialog with existing context. Ask Tove to send documentation about this

You musts show good examples of how to integrate new and old. Not to crash modern with old.

IN THE REGULATION YOU MUST SAY SOMETHING ABOUT ASTHETICS AND VALUE OF FABRIC IN PROPOSAL.

“Have designed modern things, but when you build in a historical context, you ned to build in dialog with it”

Levanger is working on town strategy – ask when this will be done

Fire-burned buildings will be built as copies on the facades, applying for money

Let house owner know what he is dealing with, give them knowledge so he can have an informed decision. Inform the planners and allow for ADA – everyone needs to be informed.

Lillehammer discussion is very angry – fire building should be a cop or modern? Architects, museum, owners, building all have different opinions.

Good architecture can have balance, give back to the city fabric and contribute modern elements.

You must think what you want to build, what you want the outcome to be, must show them what is possible.

Each individual building has its contribution to the facades of the city.

“Cars don’t need daylight, they don’t need views, and they definitely don’t shop “

Send mainstreet program to Tove

They have many tools in their toolbox. Tove is always available. She leads tours, manages programs, promotes sustainability within own government
